poor 'n' dangerous

I thought this might be appropriate since were developing cd layouts this is part of a fold out booklet for Big L's 1995 debut album. note the very dated typography.

happy place

The grid layout here is very effective. The top left photo block has the most detail and is where your eye naturally begins reading. The text and the other large picture lead your eye down and over, helped by the diagonal arrangement. Then the two smaller pictures point your eye over to the text at the bottom.

Chart a course (JVC)

This image is amazing. It works very well in pushing the point
of how realistic the HD is. It is almost impossible to tell the difference between the TV and the scenery. The text is kind of small but works with the add and JVC pops at the bottom of the add

The leading is smaller than the font size, which I guess designers do all the time, but usually they do it when the lower word doesn't have any ascenders. It's a little distracting. Too bad because the layout is pretty good, considering it's a magazine cover. Not cluttered like they usually are, although it seems they couldn't resist using different fonts. At least they stuck with a color scheme.

I like the simplicity and grid system organization of this layout. I also like the color choice. This was an article in GQ magazine very informative.

There is NO excuse for not participating.
Ignorance may be bliss, but it doesn't ensure a passing grade.

contrast

I like the use of complementary colors, it's very eye-catching.

blank page

This is a good example of using a blank page to catch the reader's attention. It does have some visual interest with the tiles at the bottom.

In this ad for Burton Snowboards I like the geometrical layout it gives flow to the ad and helps them incorporate so many pictures into one layout.

Tickle U!

This layout really does scream little kid.
I hope a little kid doesn't look at this though, its damaging my eyes, and I'd hate to see what it would do to a childs.

This Alien Workshop ad was pulled from Transworld Skateboarding I like the subtle use of color I also dig the scale nothing is to big yet the space still seems to be used well and it has a nice flow. My only beef is there is no actual skateboarding taking place.

Week 2: magazine cover

This represents the typical magazine cover: way too many different colors and sizes of text all crammed in together.

I like the picture but I don't know which headline to look at first, it's so confusing.

I chose this particular layout because I like the colors and strong but simple graphic background. Another thing I think that is working here is the use of repetition in the format, size, and color of the text boxes. This was a monthly feature in YRB magazine.

This is ¼ of a full-page newspaper ad for a liquor store. The ad is unbelievably complex and very hard to read. There are too many different font sizes and they all seem to blend together. It seems like they tried to fit too much information into too small of an area. In certain areas the background and font colors are reversed in an attempt to highlight certain items, but it only serves to further complicate the layout and make it harder to read.
